Knitting up a storm

Well those magic needles are doing their job, in just two weeks I’ve managed to finish the center of the shawl (and that is despite having to unknit and reknit over 30 rows). В I’m really quite proud of myself and now am psyching myself up to start the borders – I’m anticipating many mistakes to start with as I have to get used to a new pattern. В But here’s the center so you can see what I’ve done so far (238 rows!)

Wow so very impressive and very very pretty!
Ar you using lifelines? I always find it impossible to knit back with lace with all teh yarn overs etc I just get lost.
It’s hard to believe you only just took up knitting not that long ago.
You have out stripped my meagre knitting abilities by miles :)

I was going to use lifelines – or at least what might be meant by that (as haven’t heard of that term before). I was thinking of getting a fine piece of wool that I would thread through the stitches every 10 rows or so, so that if I had to rip things out I’d only go back that far. But I wasn’t sure how it would work. So I just learnt how to knit back. It’s easy after you do a lot of it :) And I’ve found the trick is knowing the pattern so knowing what each stitch you are undoing is meant to be.

I went to start the borders last night but I got stuck on how to do a yarn over as the first and last stitch of a row. Have emailed the designer to see if she can give me a hint. If that fails I found out there is a yahoo group for heirloom knitting so I’ll try that.

I am impressed! It looks splendid. I have yet to try one of these and I have a book on Estonian lace work so one day when I am as brave as you, it will give it a go.
    Lovely stitching!

It’s really not as hard as it looks Sonya. Sure I had to start it a few times, but that is not the pattern’s fault. And the last restart was because I’d been slipping the last stitch rather than knitting it, then realised that for picking up the sides to knit the borders, I really needed to knit them… I think that time I had to rip out 20 rows (not a good feeling when you have finally worked out how the pattern goes and learnt how to count)

Thanks Sue, it’s what I’ve been doing instead of stitching lately.
